Curriculum and Evaluation
Each teaching unit in a quarter is defined as a module. A module entails 8 weeks of teaching followed by an examination period of 2 weeks. Each Module will carry 5 credits.
There are two types of modules- core and electives. A program may have a set of core modules defined that are compulsory and a set of modules as electives. A student must take all core modules and obtain a grade other than 'F' or 'E'. In addition, a student must take sufficient electives to fulfill the credit requirements for the program. For courses requiring pre-announced laboratory components, students may be required to be present on campus for a predefined period.
The module evaluation policies (attendance, grading, marks distribution etc.) will be announced prior to the commencement of a module in that particular quarter. The end-of-quarter proctored examination will be conducted mostly in online mode.
Grades: Prior to 2022 Fourth Quarter, seven letter grades: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F were awarded. The correspondence between grades and points (on a 10-point scale) was as follows:
A*: 10, A: 10, B: 8, C: 6, D: 4, E: 2, F: 0.
Grades: From 2022 Fourth Quarter, ten letter grades: A*, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, E, F are awarded. The correspondence between grades and points (on a 10-point scale) is as follows:
A*: 10, A:10, B+:9, B:8, C+:7, C:6, D+:5, D:4, E:0, F:0
In every registered module, a student is awarded one of the letter grades indicating overall performance and earns 5 credits, except when the awarded grade is E or F. In those cases, no credits are earned. If a student does not complete sufficient requirements, the instructor may assign an I (Incomplete), which must be resolved during the next offering, else it becomes an F.
A student getting a D or D+ grade in a module may be allowed to repeat it or substitute (in case of elective modules) it with another module as suggested by academic authorities.
The minimum CPI requirement for continuing in the program or for graduation is 6.
The curriculum is designed by the faculty of concerned departments of IIT Kanpur and is approved by the Academic Senate of IITK. They may invite guest faculties/experts from reputed industries and institutions based on the program’s needs.
